Hammock Introduction

Hammock Installation

Hammocks offer a great way to relax and provide a lot of comfort. Hammocks can be made of different materials, but in general there are two types of hammocks: hammocks with spreader bards and hammocks without spreader bars. This article will provide some tips for hanging hammocks for the home owner. It will go over how to hang a hammock both indoors and outdoors and will describe how to hang a hammock with a stand, a tree, or indoors.

One of the overall keys to hanging a hammock is to make sure that you have enough room to hang the hammock. Most hammocks should be hung in an area that offers a lot more room than the legnth of the hammock. If the hammock is hung in an area that is too small, the hammock may not fit, or worse it may look like it fits, but may touch the ground when it is used. You should generally add an extra couple of feet to the legnth of the hammock when you are planning to hang it. It is better to hang it too far apart then too close together

Indoor Hammocks

If you are hanging a hammock indoors, the first thing that you should do is make sure that you have an areas to hang it. Second, you should make sure that the area in which you are going to hang it has a sturdy place to alttch it to the wall. Do not a hammock using drywall only or it will not support your weight. You should try to attached the looped screws into an area of the wall that is solid like a two by four. Avoid gas lines and other electrical area.

You can use a drill the slightly smaller than the size of the screw to get it started, however. Then screw the screw into the wall and make sure that it is tight. You should then attach a s-hook to the loop part of the screw. Next make sure that hammock can hang in the areas in which you plan to place it. If the hammock has spreader bars, it must be hung so the weight is distributwed evenly. If the area is too large, you can use a chain or sturd rope to make up the distance. Next attach the hammock to the chain, rope, or S-hook.

Outdoor Hammocks

If you are hanging the hammock outdoors, you should select two trees that are the appropriate distrance apart. You can also use a side of a deck as one or both sides of the area for the hammock. If you are using trees, make sure they are sturdy enough. There are two ways to attach the hammock to the tree. First by drilling and screwing the screw with the circle on top into the tree. Second is by using tree straps. Then follow the same procedure as you have done in the paragraph above.

If you are trying to secure the hammocks using something else like a deck or board, make sure they are study and drill and screw the screw into the wood so that it is sturdy. If you are usinga stand, assemble the stand and attach the s-Hooks to the side of the stand and then attach the hammock to the S-hooks using either chain, rope, or the look at the end of each side of the hammock.

When you have assembled and hung the hammock, always make usre that it is hung sturily before you use it.

Having good gutters and eves are crucial. Without good gutters and eves, a heavy downpour can cause an overspill of water, which can damage plants and cause the dirt to become rutted. Although gutters are not necessarily attractive, they are certainly something you need. The most important function is that gutters and eves protect your home, windows, doors, siding, and foundation from damaging water.

Typically, gutters are installed on existing roofs. However, if you will be having your roof redone, this would be the ideal time to have new gutters installed in that now, they become a part of the entire roof system. This makes them more secure and durable. Keep in mind that gutters are not used on every type of roof slope or design. If your home has a broad overhang to keep the water away from the house, then gutters may not be required.

Although you will find gutters made of all types of materials, generally, they are constructed of vinyl, wood, galvanized steel, aluminum, and copper. Vinyl gutters are a nice option for many reasons. They look great, wear well, are affordable, and found at most home improvement stores. While wood gutters are another option, they are not at the top of the list. The only time you typically see this type of material is in restoration projects.

The way gutters are sold is in sections, measuring 10 to 22 feet in length. Then, the corners, caps, drop outlets, connectors, downspouts, and fittings can be purchased to match. These other items are also made of the same type of material and while you could have a professional complete the installation, you could do the installation yourself.

One of the most popular choices is called a seamless gutter. With this option, a special machine fabricates them so there are no seams that could leak or erode. The seamless gutters are joined both inside and outside at the corners and downspout outlets. The finish of this type of gutter is baked on using aluminum, although they might also be constructed from painted steel or copper.

Of all materials used, aluminum and steel are the most common. Aluminum gutters are preferred for many homeowners in that they are inexpensive and they do not rust. However, if you want gutters that are sturdier, then steel would be the better option. Typically, the only time someone insists on steel is if they work projects around the home and lean ladders up against the home. The steel gutters could handle this while the aluminum could dent. Both of these options come in a wide array of colors and even a faux copper style. Your best bet is to look up gutter and eve installers in your local area and have them provide you with a free estimate. Just remember to get more than one estimate before making your decision and always ask about warranties and guarantees

Most people think that installing new gutters is an impossible task but in reality, with the right help and guidelines, this is something you could do. Gutters are an important factor of a home in that they provide siding and the foundation with protection. Since gutters are always exposed to the elements, they do become damaged. While some damages are easy to fix, others are so bad that new gutters need to be installed. Other times, homeowners simply replace outdated styles with new technology gutters.

If you are planning to replace your gutters, you will quickly discover that you have a wide selection from which to choose. Just keep in mind that the vinyl, snap-together type is by far the best. In addition to being maintenance free, these gutters will also fit into most budgets. Finally, unlike metal gutters that will dent, the vinyl type simply pops back out when dented. However, the best aspect of this type of gutter is that they are amazingly easy to install.

The first step is to create a map of your home prior to shopping for gutters. You will need to determine the length needed as well as the number of downspouts as well as their length. Typically, a homeowner will map the existing structure and pattern of the existing gutters and then choose downspout locations the same. You will also discover that gutters now come in a number of colors to match or coordinate with the color of your home.

Next, you will need to mark your gutters slope. If you find the gutter is less or equal to 35 feet, that means the high point is at one end, sloping down toward the downspout. In this case, the high point is one-inch from the top of the fascia, sloping one-quarter inch for every 10 feet. However, if the run were greater than 35-feet, then the high point would be in the middle of the run, sloping to the downspout on either side. With this scenario, the high point would still be one-inch from the top of the fascia, sloping one-quarter inch every 10 feet. What you need to do is measure one-inch from the top of the fascia on both ends, making sure to slope the gutters one-quarter inch per 10 feet, going toward the downspout in the middle. Using a chalk line, you will snap it to create your guide.

For your next step, you need to install the downspout outlets. This can be done by using a one and one-quarter, deck screw. The goal is to have the outlets set even with your chalk line to ensure the downspout attaches properly to the edge of the house. How you will need to attach the gutter hangers by fastening them to the fascia about every 24 inches. To do this, use one and one-quarter, deck screws, placing them approximately one-inch from the end of the roof. The reason is that the gutters will have better support on both ends. The gutter corners will now be attached, making sure you use the ones without a downspout and not at the end of the run.

For your next step, you will need to attach the cut gutters and end of gutter run. You can use a hacksaw to help them fit in snugly between the downspout outlet and the end of your roof. You want this to start at the middle of the downspout outlet, to the roofs end. Once that is done, you will place the end cap, snapping the section securely into the downspout outlet. Then, the gutter will need to be hooked into the hangar. Now, the other sections will be cut so they can fit between the downspout outlets, again starting from the middle of the outlet.

Now to connect the gutter sections with the connectors, this can be done best on the ground. Simply snap the connectors onto the sections and remember if the run is less than 35-feet, the end cap will need to be attached without an outlet. For the next step of hanging the gutters, you need to get the help of a friend or two. The drainpipe will now be attached once the gutters are up. To do this, cut a piece of pipe again making sure it fits between the downspout elbow, going onto the outlet and the elbow of the downspout on the wall. The elbows will then be put onto the pipe, snapping it onto the outlet. To secure the other elbow to the wall of the home, you can use a drainpipe hanger.

Finally, you will need to install the drainpipe. To accomplish this, cut one more piece of drainpipe, again making it to fit between the elbow and wall, placing about one-foot above ground level. The drainpipe will then be snapped into the elbows top portion, attaching second elbow to the bottom section. With another drainpipe hanger, fasten it to the lower portion of the elbow. Then, as a way of funneling the water away from the homes foundation, you want to cut a piece of pipe.

gazebo design

Sitting outdoors in your own private gazebo is a wonderful way to spend time with friends or snuggled up with someone special. Depending on the size of gazebo you want to build, you can create a huge place with a roof that would be perfect for entertaining or if you want a place that is more intimate, a place where you can find some quiet time away from the busy day.

The best bet is to buy a gazebo kit, which typically includes the wood, hardware, design plans, and everything needed to make a magnificent gazebo. Generally, the main support will consist of two 2 x 8 pieces that are nailed securely together. Then, you would double 2 x 8 rim joists coupled with a number of 2 x 8 and 2 x 6 joists for the interior. Next, between the interior joists you would use short, diagonal pieces to create 90-degree nailing angles. For the roof, you want six posts for support, consisting of a single, short post located at the center, which would help provide support to the main girder.

The most important thing to remember when building a gazebo is that the ground must be completely level. To accomplish this, after you have located the center of the location, drive a stake into the ground to mark it. Next, on to of the stake, you want to drive a nail, leaving it to protrude about one inch to serve as a pivot point. You now want to cut a piece of lumber five feet long, drilling a hole into the end of each so they are 55 1/2-inches apart. One of these holes will be fitted over the protruding nail and then another nail will be secured face down into the other end. Now, you want to create a circle on the ground, by walking around your pivot point.

From here, you will position the posts, anchoring them into concrete tube footing, construct the steps, install two diagonal girder support pieces that will serve to keep the hangers for the main girder, work with the framing plan according to your specific kit, prepare the outer rim joists, lay the decking, and complete your roof.

Again, the specific directions will vary from one plan to the next and the instructions are very specific to each. Therefore, the best option is to determine first the purpose your gazebo will serve so you know the size needed as well as functionality. Obviously, if you want a place where you can place benches and tables, keep your barbecue grill, and perhaps have enough floor room to dance, then you are looking at a large gazebo while just a place with a swing would only require simple design.

Once you have your gazebo constructed, you can use your creativity to hang twinkling lights that create a romantic or whimsical atmosphere, plant beautiful flowers around the base, or perhaps add a fountain that could be enjoyed while sitting under the stars at night. Having your own gazebo makes a wonderful addition to any home. Just remember that this is a larger undertaking so if possible, gather a few friends to complete the job

Even homes with two or three garages, seem to have too little storage. In fact, this is one of the main complaints of most homeowners – not enough storage. Many of those that do have homes with garages keep the cars parked outside, keeping sports equipment, tools, boxed storage, extra furniture, and so on, stored inside. One way to increase the amount of storage in a garage is to start by adding shelves. Shelving options include prefabricated and site-built. To purchase all the necessary equipment and materials, simply visit your local hardware or home improvement store, or lumberyard.

Prefabricated shelves provide a solution that is sturdy, portable, adjustable, and easy and quick to install. The best option for garage storage in relation to prefabricated shelves is steel. Many people think that they should only purchase the steel shelves if they have heavier items to store when in fact, steel should be the option of choice regardless how heavy or light the items. Although plastic shelves cost less, ultimately they will break down quicker than steel. For fabricated shelves, consider the various types of things you plan to store. Additionally, you need to determine an area within the garage where the steel shelves will be located, taking careful measurements since this type of shelving cannot be cut down to size. This means when you shop for steel shelves, you will find standards sizes from which to choose.

Prefabricated shelving is also rated according to the weight it can accommodate. These ratings range from lightweight, perfect for storing the family’s Christmas tree, sports equipment, or other boxed storage that does not weigh much, to heavy-duty, which would include items such as paint, sacks of concrete, heavy tools, and so on. To determine the appropriate rating for your needs, try to average the weight of everything you want to store and choose a shelf that can accommodate 25% over that average. You also want to consider that with prefabricated shelves, they can be adjusted. The best choice is an option that can be adjusted in a minimum of two locations within the framework. Make sure the unit has supporting pins to help prevent the shelves from dislodging. Many of the prefabricated shelves specific for heavy loads way need to be attached to the wall to ensure the unit does not tip over. This would be especially important if you have smaller children that might want to climb on the shelves for play or to find something.

Site-built shelves generally require some carpentry work. In most cases, this type of shelf is less expensive and can be adapted to various sizes to match your space need. The site-built shelf is usually constructed from -inch plywood or a 1×2-foot piece of lumber that is placed on heavy-duty shelf brackets. To install this type of shelf, you would first attach the brackets, making sure you attach them to the studs, using lag bolts. If you want even more stability, the brackets can be attached to a ledger, which is a 1×4-foot piece of lumber that is attached to the studs on the backside of the shelf. Even adding metal brackets that have been augmented will help provide additional strength.

Floor-supported site-built shelves are an even more sturdy design. For this option, you can run vertical 2×4-foot pieces of lumber every 48 inches, allowing them to rest on the floor at the bottom, and then attaching them to the ceiling joists or rafters at the top. If you like, you can run additional 2×4-foot pieces of lumber horizontally on the edge between the uprights and then use particleboard or plywood for the shelves. Generally, the shelves measure from 18 to 24 inches deep and are spaced along the horizontal 2×4-foot lumber. Another excellent option is rafter-hung shelves. For this option, 2×4-foot lumber is bolted to the sides of the rafters as a way of forming overhead support. This framework can be left open for storing items that are long such as ladders or snow skis, or you can add plywood to create the shelves. One advantage of this option is that not as much floor space is used. Additionally, because this option is hung, you can adjust the height to accommodate any vehicle needing to be parked in the garage

garage door opener

There is nothing more dreadful than having to climb out of your car on a cold winter evening after a long day at work to open your garage door. With a garage door opener, you can stay snugly inside your warm car until you get inside the garage. The following morning, instead of having to open the door, drive the car out, get out and close the door, and then crawl back into the car, you simply click the button! In addition to an abundance of convenience, garage door openers also provide safety.

As you begin to shop around, you will find a number of different operations. For instance, the screw drive system is designed with a lifting mechanism that uses a threaded steel rod to move along. The nice thing about this particular garage door opener is that it only has a few moving parts so the maintenance level is extremely low and the power high.

Another type is the chain drive system. With this system, a metal chain is used to lift the door up and down on a track. This is the most common type of garage door opener and the least expensive. The one drawback is that they are often a little on the noisy side. Technology has offered yet another type of opener, which is available only through one manufacturer. This mechanism is computer controlled, meaning it uses neither chain nor screw. If you have a garage with little headroom, this is the perfect choice.

Be sure to choose a garage door opener that has the right size motor for your type and side of door. For example, if your garage has double doors, you need a minimum of one-half horsepower. Just remember that if you only have a single garage door, you can also benefit from this size motor in that it will not have to work as hard and thereby last longer. Additionally, you want a motor that has what is referred to as a soft start and stop. This means the overall operation is much quieter and the door experiences less wear and tear.

Regarding speed, the more expensive garage door openers generally are quicker to open and close the door. This means you get in and out of the garage quicker, which is an advantage for people living in harsh climates or in areas where they want the ultimate in security. It used to be that you had to be concerned about a door closing on an object or child. However, new laws introduced by the Federal government have changed that so all garage doors have to have stop features that when they come down and bump something, they immediately stop and then go back up.

For security, choose a garage door opener that has a built in light so the minute you press the button to open the door, the light goes on and stays on for a few minutes while you get out of the car and inside the house. Two other options for security include having a keypad installed so children can get into the house after school so no key is hidden for intruders to find, and an opener with a rolling code, which means that each time the door is opened, the code changes so outsiders cannot get in

There is something very magical about owning a garden pond. As you sit outdoors on your patio or deck at night, listening to the sound of the crickets and the gurgling of your pond, you feel as though you are camping somewhere deep in the country. During the day, the sound of the fountain creates a calming atmosphere to help you forget about all the worries of the day.

Garden ponds have become so popular that many homes now enjoy the ambience. In fact, the very essence of water as it trickles down over rocks is such a powerful median that homes all across the world have indoor ponds. The great thing about a water pond is that it can be as small or large as you like. If you want something small and more intimate, a nice indoor pond would be ideal. If you want something more elaborate, you could create a Japanese garden pond with lily pads and Koi fish.

Often, people who create a pond are thrilled to discover that the number of animals and birds increase, as they come to drink from the water. You might even experience butterflies and frogs, all making their way to the cool retreat. Therefore, if you want your pond to attract wildlife, be sure you use only special water treatments not to harm them.

Water ponds can be made by digging out earth and pouring concrete to setting a prefabricated liner into the hole. Most often, these ponds are about three to five feet in diameter and with the addition of a fountain, statue, some plants, rocks, and perhaps a light fixture, you have an amazing place to relax and enjoy.

If you live in an apartment or have a small yard, you can create a wonderful pond by using an old half-whiskey barrel, found at most hardware and home improvement stores. By lining the bottom with a special black, plastic liner, you can add a pump, a water fountain, a few fish and plants, and have a beautiful pond. Just be sure if creating a barrel pond on your apartment balcony that you find out first the weight restrictions.

When creating a pond in your backyard, be sure the drainage holes (if you choose to have one) always flow away from the house. The best option is to use a pump that re-circulates the water, especially if you plan to have fish in the pond. You should also use a filter to keep the water clean and make sure the pump and any lighting is submersible. By using these few things, the maintenance of the pond will decrease and the amount of time available to enjoy it will increase.

Making ponds is not a difficult task and the results are truly amazing. You will find that you spend more time outdoors away from the television just to watch the fish and listen to the sound of the water.

Many people are intimidated about laying their own Brick & Masonry. However, with the right knowledge, you can learn to complete great projects. Bricks have been a part of building for thousands of years and while they were first made from clay, today, the materials have been improved upon to include ceramic and silica. Other versions now include clay, sand, and water, which are all heated to produce the hardness needed for building.

The great thing about bricks is that they work to help insulate a home and, they are weatherproof. They can withstand the harshest heat and cold, wind, rain, and they do not fade. Additionally, the options for bricks today include wonderful colors, shapes, and sizes. This means that regardless of your project, you can choose something unique to make a statement or stick with a more traditional brick. The following are the various types of bricks available:
Building Also called Structural bricks, these are the type used for construction. Typically, these bricks have two or three holes, which work to reduce weight load and cut down on cost of material.

Face This type of brick is solid and come in a number of great colors, shapes, and sizes

Firebrick The nice thing about this type of brick is that they are heat resistant and used for anything heat-sensitive such as a fireplace.

Pavers The paver brick is what you use for edging, patios, and sidewalks

Antique/Tumbled If you want to create something with an antique look, this would be the type of brick to choose
Bricks also come in varying grades. For example, the Grade SW stands for Severe Weathering, which can handle freeze and thaw cycles found in many regions. The Grade MW stands for Moderate Weathering, which can handle temperatures of frost to freezing. This grade is what you will find in many outdoor walls. Finally, the last grade is No Weathering, which is not intended for outdoor use, just indoor construction.

Laying brick is actually easier than you might think. The key to a successful brick-laying job is to take your time. Remember, just like anything new, all you need is a little practice and understanding of load-bearing aspects. If you need to change the size of shape of a brick, you can use a special chisel and hammer. Another option is to use a circular saw or a brick saw that has a diamond blade.

When buying brick, you can estimate how much you will need by following these guidelines:

For each square foot, you will need five standard size bricks. For a wall, you should expect that you would need seven per square foot. If you buy per pallet, there should be 516 bricks and for pavers, 896. The main thing is to remember that if you are just starting out, you will make mistakes but do not stress in that mistakes can be corrected. Most home improvement and hardware stores sell helpful books that provide step-by-step diagrams to help you complete your project.

brick barbeque

Everyone loves to brick barbeque. Regardless of the weather, hot, humid, rain, or snow, grilling food is not only fun, but also healthy and tasty. The great thing about a barbeque pit is that it will last for many years, is easy to clean, and provides the perfect setting for a friend or family gathering. Constructing a brick fireplace is an excellent project and one that several people can get involved with building. This type of barbeque grill provides a lot more space for grilling meat, poultry, or vegetables and is an impressive feature for your backyard. Other excellent benefits are that a Brick Barbeque is both durable and weather resistant.

Brick Barbeques can be built out of brick with mortar or with brick without mortar. If you decide to use mortar, you will find your barbeque to be extra durable and permanent. If you build it without mortar, while still durable, it will not be as durable. Additionally, if you moved and decided you wanted to take your barbeque with you, it could be broken down and moved. A great advantage of a Brick Barbeque is that it is easy to use and not terribly expensive. When your Brick Barbeque is complete, your backyard will be everyone’s favorite house for cooking outdoors.

For this particular example, we will be talking about a Brick Barbeque built with mortar. To get started, you will need several tools and materials to get the job done. You need barbeque grills, fire grates, ashtrays, pointed trowel, chalk line, dry-mix brick mortar, builder’s square, level, SW-grade bricks, Z-shaped metal ties, and a 7″ x 3/8″ rebar (24 pieces). Additional items include a cutting board, brackets, and fluted masonry nails.

To build your barbeque, purchase the needed materials at a hardware or home improvement store. Depending on the size of grills and grates chosen, you will know how large your barbeque will need to be. Start by determining the number of bricks needed. The average barbeque measures 13 courses high, which are layers of bricks. Once you know how many bricks you need, you will want to determine where your grill will be located and you want your grill to be built on a concrete or brick platform. Other considerations include the direction in which the barbeque grill is facing so when grilling, smoke will flow the correct way.

Once the position is determined, you will mark it using the chalk. Then using the pointed trowel, you will spread on a layer of mortar onto the base without going outside the chalk line. The first layer of bricks then goes on, creating your first course. To the sides of each of these bricks, spread on mortar and then back the bricks up to one another. Using the same process, continue building all the courses to 13 layers. Use the level to ensure each course is level as it is being laid and the builders-square, making sure the corners are at a 90-degree angle. On each of the odd numbered courses, you need to set the Z-shaped metal ties into mortar, distributing them evenly. Be sure to put the Z-shaped ties in varying locations throughout each course.

For each side of the wall, you should use three bricks wide each. Before you place a vertical tier on the bricks, set four rebars on each side as a way of supporting the grate. The same process will also be used to install the rebars on the ninth and twelfth course, which provides enough room for two racks. For the top course, you need to lay the inner row with the narrow side facing out (stretcher) and the outer row laid with the short side (header). You can check with your local hardware or home improvement store, which usually has diagrams that are exceptionally easy to follow.

Awnings

Awnings have been a way of providing shade for patios and decks for years. With an awning, you can block both sunlight and heat from beating down through a patio door or provide you with shade while relaxing outside on a lazy Saturday afternoon. You will also find that awnings can make a great window topper and used as a way of protecting furniture and rugs from directly sunlight, which can cause fading.

In fact, during the hot summertime, by using an awning to block out heat, you can save as much as 65% off your energy bill on windows facing south and as high as 77% on windows facing east and west. Awnings are also great protectors for woodwork around windows. Typically, as the sun shines down on the wood day after day along with the rain and snow, the wood can become warped and rot. However, by using an awning, the woodwork is protected.

An awning will also add protection for outdoor furniture on your patio or deck, let you open your windows during a mid-summer rainstorm, reduce glare on computer screens and televisions, and best of all, they add a nice decorative touch to the aesthetics of the home.

You will discover that awnings are typically made from fabric or aluminum. The awnings made from fabric do require a little more maintenance than an aluminum awning but also offer a better variety of color and shape. Aluminum awnings are low maintenance, sturdy, and provide a retro look.

The nice thing about awnings regardless of material is that they are both designed to withstand high winds and harsh weather. Although a tornado or hurricane may be too much, you can feel confident that most high winds will not damage the awning. When deciding the size of awning to buy, it really boils down to your personal preference. However, you also want to consider the amount of energy you want to save.

For example, if you will be adding an awning on windows facing east or west, you want to have a drop ranging from 65% to 75%. For awnings going up on south-facing windows, you want the drop to be shorter, ranging from 45% to 60% coverage. Just remember that window and door canopies are versatile in that they can be installed with or without side panels.

Additionally, rollup and retractable awnings are an excellent choice in that they block out the sun during the hot, summer months but then allow the warm sun to shine in during the winter. The larger the awning, the more protection you will achieve and if you plan to install the awning on your patio or deck, the retractable model is the most convenient.
